Volunteer With Us

Your time, skills, and opinions can help grow DUG!  The DUG Network is 100% managed by volunteers from the DC metro area, and our members are truly at the heart of what we do. We are currently seeking volunteers, including three new Board members, to help with a variety of activities to support our website, newsletter, and social media accounts, as well as to help us grow our organization.

Short-Term Volunteers

As a short-term volunteer, you will receive occasional emails (about one per month) from DUG with information on specific activities that might interest you.  As a growing organization, our needs frequently vary, and these may include calls for assistance with discrete activities or longer-term/recurring support, like helping to monitor our events calendar; updating our database of organizations and programs; contributing to our social media communications; or managing event logistics.  The email will also include information on the approximate amount of time each activity will require, as well as any special technical skills needed.  You can also sign up through the link below to participate in our bi-weekly DUG planning meetings.

If interested, please complete this short form so we can learn more about you, as well as add you to our volunteer roster.

Board Members

The DUG Network is also seeking three new board members, described below.  Applicants should be able and willing to commit to the work and to provide meaningful ideas and contributions to improve and grow the organization. These are strictly volunteer opportunities.

Art Director: Do you have a good eye and experience with graphic design? Our new Art Director will lead efforts to build and improve the visual appeal, layout, and usability of our website and other communications materials. The position requires an ability to create mock-ups, layouts, and media materials, along with familiarity and access to tools such as Photoshop needed to create high quality design assets. If you can also put together the CSS to implement it, that’s a huge plus.

Membership Director: Are you personable and enjoy connecting and interacting with all sorts of people? Our new Membership Director will lead efforts to grow our volunteer base, as well as coordinate tasks and events among current volunteers. There are no technical skills required, however those interested should generally be organized, responsive and personable, and comfortable drafting and coordinating written communications.

Finance Director: Are you the managerial sort who’s good with accounting? We are in need of a highly-organized and detail-oriented volunteer who can not only track and report on our financial affairs, but (more immediately) oversee DUG’s registration with the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA); handle our minimal banking needs; and deal with any tax implications and filings for our non-profit Co-Op.

Work Style: We tend to assign collaborative work according to board members’ skills and interests, but everyone is expected to pitch in when things need to get done. Sometimes that means we reach beyond our comfort zone to handle new and unfamiliar duties. For instance, you might also write content for our social media accounts, website, and newsletter; help maintain our online calendar of events; take meeting notes; or manage event logistics. Tasks and responsibilities are varied. Sound like fun? If so, you could be the person we’re looking for!

Time Commitment: Board members attend regular bi-weekly meetings on Fridays (6:30-8pm), at which time members will take on intermittent assignments and/or responsibilities appropriate for their chosen role. It’s not necessary to attend every meeting, but generally consistent attendance is helpful. We also hold special planning sessions for discrete activities as needed. Time commitments usually range from two to six hours per week, depending on a director’s role and availability. Board members serve one-year terms and may resign at will.

If interested in a position on our board, please email tara@dugnetwork.org for additional information. Kindly include a brief statement on why you’re interested in DUG and what skills or experience you can bring to the position.
