Learning how and where our food is grown from can be a fun and truly impactful experience. Many rural farms and organizations that support farms operating in surrounding areas offer educational and recreational activities for DC area residents interested in venturing beyond the confines of the city to learn about production at a broader scale. Chesapeake CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training)

Founded in 2010 by a few local farmers, Chesapeake CRAFT brings together the community of new and aspiring farmers in Northern Virginia and Maryland for farm tours and potlucks throughout the growing season. These simple gatherings are fun, informative, and build networking amongst the farming community.

Claggett Farm

For 20 years the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s 285 acre Clagett Farm has provided free and reduced-price, fresh produce to people living in poverty and near-poverty in Washington, D.C. The project, a collaboration with Capital Area Food Bank, blends local, sustainable organic agriculture with social justice.

Owl’s Nest Farm grows unique, delicious, diverse vegetables on four acres in Upper Marlboro, MD, just twenty miles from Washington, DC. Managed cooperatively by farmer-friends Spencer Ellsworth, Genevieve Fulco and Liz Whitehurst, Owl’s Nest Farm uses organic practices to grow real food for our CSA members, farmer’s market customers, restaurants, and friends.
